recording output from mac or pc

hello fellow resolumers,
i wish to make live recordings of my output for editing and presentation.
i have resolume 2 on a pc, and resolume 3 on a mac.
i've tried recording onto a sony DVD recorder, but the files come out as VOB files which have to be converted to avi before i can edit on the computer. The converting process dramatically lowers the image quality.
i have a DV camcorder with DV in (mini IEEE firewire), but the computer doesn't treat it as a second screen, so i can't set it as an output within the screen setup of resolume, which means i can't record that way. -or is there another way to do this?
even if i got a camcorder with av in which has been suggested, (which would solve the problem for the pc output), that wouldn't be ideal to use with the new macbook pro which only has VGA or DVI out and would then need a scan converter to make the signal anologue to go to the camcorder's av in, which would then end up converting it back to digital again which seems daft.
does anyone know of a Digital Video Recorder with VGA and s-video/phono inputs? (but doesn't cost hundreds of pounds!)
any suggestions would be much appreciated,
cheers!

try copying the .vob files to your computer and changing the file extension from .vob to .mpeg
it doesnt always work, but a lot of the time it does.

this should always work so far with renaming it from .vob to .mpg
if you can't copy the files from the dvd to your harddisk, try dvd shrink or something...
but in this case there seems to be a copy protection

Thanks, guys.
i tried it on the pc and it worked!! (the mac wouldn't allow me to change the file name).
you're right, VJair, it worked changing .VOB to .mpg,(not .mpeg), thanks.
interestingly, adobe after effects didn't like the file and crashed when i tried to import it, but i was able to import it into windows movie maker and so i could either edit it there, or use movie maker to save it as an avi, which after effects did accept.
Thanks for your help, i thought i might have to fork out on another recording device!
As far as recording the output from the mac is concerned, it looks like i'll need to buy a scan converter, otherwise i can't plug it into the DVD recorder. As has been discussed previously on the forum, the new macbook pros don't have analogue outputs, only VGA or DVI, and although it may be the way forward, most recorders only take s-video or phono inputs. It will probably be a good investment to get a scan converter, though, so when i play at gigs where the projectors are set up for s-video or phono, then i'll be able to fit in.
many thanks,

with premiere or final cut an mpeg stream shoult work just fine....
after effects has problems with mpeg, divx and so on.. AE is for post production and not for Video-Editing

I know you're right -premiere would be better for the purpose. I'll try loading the .mpg file into premiere instead of after effects.
you mentioned streaming. Do you mean that i can send resolume's output to another computer and record it live into premiere?
If so, how would i send the signal, as my other computer doesn't have a video in socket.
it does have firewire, which as i understand works both ways (in and out), but resolume doesn't seem to recognise a device attached with firewire as an output (in the screen setup box).
what method would you recommend?
It would be really useful to fully understand the different ways to record, so i know what options there are.
cheers

Hey!
one way is to use a analogue-to-digital converter like discussed
here. I've just bought the ADVC 55 to be able to mix the output of another computer without the need for a hardware video mixer. (however, I'm still concerned about the delay...) - will test it this weekend.
But the idea to use it as an input in Premiere sounds also promising for preparing footage

I have tried both ways today, wish list! a key stroke recorder like in Arkaos!
Today i tried video out to my mini dv camera - old school style. and then new school - screen capturing a windowed display via screen flow on my MBP. both give only satisfactory results. I think the screen grab software works the best as right now on my MBP I have to go down vga to a scan convertor and through cables and couplers to get to my camera.
Question is this . .
How can I ensure my output display resolution is bigger than the default of 640 x 480 on a windowed display?
How do I make it say 800 x 600?
