playback FPS

In this post I was told that frame rate of recordings made by Avenue will fluctuate making for movies of unexpected durations.
Does the same hold true for playback?
Last night I was beginning to set up my decks for a performance later this month and I swear some of the clips played back at a frame rate or speed other than I created, because timings between my output "window" in Avenue and music playing back on my iPod didn't match up. If Avenue can't keep up for some reason on playback does this affect the timing of the clips being played back?
The movies I'm playing are 640x480, 29.97, DXV codec. The hardware is a 17" Aluminum MacPro, the last version before the Unibodies began shipping, storage is a GRAID mini connected via FireWire 800 and according to AJA Speed Test it does 50MB/sec. I am generally playing back just one movie at a time, though at transitions there will obviously be two playing until the transition completes and I remember to turn off the underlying layer.
