hy!!

this codec thing confuses me!

I use a colour video clip for testing different codecs.(the old story about the best codec for resolume!)

Indeo 5.03 vs flash file.

The clip compressed with indeo has got a file size of
_2,33 MB.
and playback rate of
_478kBit/s
(quality is pretty fine)

The same clip rendered as flash file has got a file size of
_30,9 MB
the rate of playback of swfs I don`t know.
(quality is fine)

Fact is, that the flash files, when I use three layers in resolume,raise the speed to maximum, are playing smoother than the indeo files.

Is the playback rate of swf files much more smaller than the indeo`s?

Or does flash files faster encode than
avi files?

I renderd the flash video from after effects, but I can´t find the specifications about the playback rate of the file.

When you say flash video are you talking .swf?

Flash has a defult framerate of 12 fps, you can obviously change the movie parameters in flash itself to play 25fps for pal or up to ntsc. But defult is 12 within flash. Also if you were export straight from flash you would have compression options for the raster images, again by defult this would be on the low side. However due to your flash file size I'd say it looks like you video is hardly compressed, if at all.

Without full details of indeo compression eg... resolution, length of clip, compression % etc, keyframes set to every? Your asking the impossible. In terms of flash, I seriously doubt flash itself would produce a 30 MB file, but again cannot be sure without any idea of how AE encoded it.

Your asking for solutions without allowing us the facts, you could try and download Gspot, its a little application that tells you the codec and compression settings of a piece of video.

but again if its an swf rather than a avi then it wont help, I don't use that particular indeo codec, I usually go for indeo 5.10, but look on vjf, and there is always ton of info being debated regarding codecs, if the video is limited in colour then go for the cinepac, if its pure speed try the midivid, indeo is excellent quality but requires more power to playback. If you dont ever scratch then go for a mjpeg codec from say main concept. If its only vector based work then just use swf's.

Its a bag of wormsmy friend. Once opened you'll really get confused.

hehe one more thing if your using AE and choosing flash setting to create avi's and not swf's, I'm fairly sure its based your actually using sorenson spark as that is the basic encoder now included in flash mx.

The defult setting for that are quality 84% but keyframes are set at 26 by default, so if it is an avi your talking about then its not redrawing every frame, but only doing a full redraw every 26 frames and just altering individual pixel changes frame on frame, now although this is good for straight playback if gonna be terrible at scratching video back and forth. Sorenson however is a codec many vj's do swear by, but again all down to you as an individual.
