MULTI OUTPUT AUDIO PROBLEM/QUESTION

Hi,
I play in a live band using audio backing tracks that are sent to the PA with our drummer playing to click and we've just decided to use video VJ visuals projected onto a backdrop when we play.
We up to know have been running just audio via Logic on a laptop being able to send stereo backing tracks to the PA and a simultaneous seperate mono click track to the drummer via a multichannel EDIROL interface. We now are wanting to use VJ visuals from Resolume at the same time and do everything in resolume that we were doing before audio wise.
So to send stereo backing tracks wav to the PA desk and at the same time send a click track wav to the drummer in resolume.
I have a multichannel EDIROL audio interface but my guess is is that in Resolume it is not possible to have 2 DIFFERENT audio wav clips playing at the same time ....one going to the PA desk and the other via a different output going to the drummer.I don't want to mix the out puts I want one pure click wav that the audience doesn't hear going to the drummer and one pure backing track audio wav without any click going to the PA that the audience does hear.
Has anybody any ideas how to do this ????...as it seems
1)The Audio preferences page ,despite my 3 stereo output possible EDIROL FA-66 interface, only seems to allow one stereo wav sound out (it seems the preview output would be the same as the master output)
2) you can only put one audio wav per video clip
3) playing different videos on different layers doesn't allow you to completely seperate audio wav on each clip..it would always be a blend
Very desperate here.....thanks for all help!!!
Cheers

Hey Wetsuit
Resolume works much like a DJ style mixer. You can mix several audio sources into one output. Via the preview output, you can 'cue up' another audio track for mixing. When you click the name handle of a clip, you'll see the video in the preview monitor, and hear the audio on the preview output.
You are correct in your assumptions that you can not add multiple audio files to a clip, or separate different audio tracks.
One way of going about what you want purely in Avenue, is to send the backing tracks to the PA via the master out, and send clicktrack to the drummer via the preview out. This could prove difficult to sync up properly though. In general, if you have a Logic setup working already, perhaps it's easier to sync up Avenue and Logic via midi, and to let Logic take care of the audio part, and Avenue of the video.
Anyway, I hope that answers your questions and gives you some ideas on how to achieve what you want.

Hi Joris,
thanks for your answer...I'm going to go the route you suggested last resolume for visuals only and logic for sound....
May be a silly question but can you tell me with both resolume and logic on the same laptop is it possible to midi them together or do they need to be on seperate laptops?
In other words how would I get resolume to recognise a software midi controller like logic in the midid preferences/devices section ?
thanks once again

Hey Wetsuit
You'll want to send a Midi out from Logic to the Apple IAC driver, which in turn can be detected by Avenue. Check the Avenue/Live tutorial for more info (
http://resolume.com/avenue/manual/). The same principle applies for both Ableton Live and Logic.
Hope that helps!

Hi Joris,
doing this is now fine in logic to resolume.
But the band thought we'd try another set up.With logic there is obviously the delay in going from song to song of having to close a song down when finished and start another one which can be about 7 seconds. So we tried a set up with a drum machine sending midi via an edirol fa 66 interface so that the drummer gets a click from the drum machine separately and the stereo backing track is loaded into each video clip relevant to it on Resolume to go the PA .( so no need for logic at all)
So far so good with midi mapping we are easily able to start and stop clips rapidly as we want (less than 1 second)...the problem comes in the sync of the drum machine click to the sound wavs on the clips on resolume. They don't start off in sync ,in other words the drum machine click seems behind the click and as the clip progresses gets increasingly behind.I've got all the settings correct in resolume...so it seems as if there is a massive latency problem. The drum machine is an old yamaha rx17...but midi is midi however old right?
any ideas on things to change or check

I'm not entirely sure how your setup is exactly, but if you're playing the clips in timeline mode, they can start drifting over a length of time (mostly to do with system resources getting tied up). If the drumcomputer can send midi clock, you could use that to sync Resolume and the drumcomputer, and then you can play the clips in BPM sync mode to keep them tight. If all else fails, I suppose you could manually change the BPM in Resolume for each track.
Also, turning off the quantization/beat snap for all clips should make them trigger immediately after getting the midi signal.
Hope I understood you correctly

Hi Joris,
I'm definitely playing the clips in BPM sync mode ...problem occurs in this mode.
Set up is Yamaha RX17 drum computer midi out to midi in of Edirol FA-66 interface which attaches via firewire to macbook pro with 10.5.8 running Resolume.Clips on resolume have video and audio wavs loaded seperately.
The last point is relevant as i haven't seen or done this...turning off the quantization/beat snap for all clips..
Is there anything else in resolume that may alter the way the midi signal is handled?..the preferences page i'm sure i have the midi settings right
Cheers

is it something to do with the buffer size setting?... as I have just found putting the beat snap starts the clip at the right place but the click wanders out of sync with the audio on the wav on the clip with time as the track progresses.
I think the buffer size may be the culprit...so any tips on how to use the buffer size setting to stop the click wandering out of sync?
Cheers

I don't think the buffer size has much to do with it, but definitely give it a try. It never hurts to try different things, if only to learn more about the program
I'm leaning more towards a difference in Clip BPM and Playback BPM. Does the BPM that Resolume assigns to the clip match with the master BPM? And do these settings match with the BPM you bounced the audio at?

Hi,
reducing the buffer size from 512 to 128 gets rid of the problem ...the sync now seems perfect.Everything you mention above I had all ready done and the sync was going out as the clip played .Lowering the buffer size seems to get rid of the problem
