I think an effect that created an outline (around the opaque areas in a clip) with size and hue variables could be really handy, and probably fairly easy to implement?

Maybe something like the Find Edges effect could do the trick?

Had a play with that last night, but don't think it can be used as a solution. The feature might perhaps be possible to implement as a mode in that effect?

I think it's something that will be increasingly useful as more people use alpha in their compositions - a good way to make a layer stand out from the one below it or create a tech/comic style.
