Video Filesize Question

Hey All,

Just a quick noob question.

What size are the videos (in MB) you use with Resolume 3?

I have been rendering my edits (each about 5-6 minutes long) in Sony Vegas Pro 9 using the PICVideo Codec, with the settings in the Resolume Manual, at a resolution of 768x576, and my videos come out around 350 - 500mb each.

That sounds a bit too big for a video to be used for VJ-ing... isnt it? I would have thought for 5-6 minutes of film, you would want the size to be around 100mb.

How large are the filesizes that you guys use? Does the filesize slow down/put extra strain on Resolume?

Thanks,

Hugh

filesize should be the least of your concerns. image quality and playback are of much greater importance.

if it plays fine , then the filsize is irrelevant.

its not surprising, to think that way if you see every other video on the web, be it a rip or a yt video, with 2h of film and only weighting a 700mb, but as vjair says its about quality...

i learned to live with 4, 15, 120, and 300gb, nowadays we all have at our fingertips a quality disk with terabytes, i now delete whole partitions at once, move files of 15gb at will, damn..

granted that these are not the ideal for vjing, since most are 7200rpm and with latencys that might not be suitable but i suspect that in 2\3 years time the ssd's will have equal or greater capacity at the same 100€ range...

but even for now if some have a fast 150gb HD, do the math 1 video 500mb, if you play 60 videos\h, and play for 5h straight, you'll use up the 150gb...
well im not sure anyone will play 60 videos\h so math tells me that with 150gb you can manage without problem, and if you have 300gb, you'll have no reason to complain if you prepare accordingly before a gig of 10h

of course we all want options on stage, and until fast, high capacity hd's flood the market most of us will have to make do and organise what we take with us, which it actually can be a good thing

hold on a year or two, and unless someone comes up with super-duper HD before there are 1tb SSD available at 100€, will be just fine ;)

Good point! Sorry for going offtopic a bit, but it kind of reminds me of not too long ago when DJs had to haul around crates of vinyl, instead of having their entire mp3 library at their fingertips. I still heard the most amazing sets. In the end it's about what you choose to do with your selection, and not about how many clips or effects you have or even what software you use.

oh yeah, the question wasn't about saving space on my hard disk.

I am more concerned about the performance of Resolume. Good to hear that I'm not the only one with (what seems like) giant videos.
