Animated gif workflow

What’s the best way to get animated gifs into Resolume? I’ve got a party coming up that needs videogame/8bit stuff, and single animated character gifs seem to be the only option for what I have in mind.
I’ve tried using Vegas but I can’t get clean pixels when I export (tried DXV and Animation codecs).
After Effects (after first converting to avi with VirtualDub) has the same problem.
The VirtualDub avi is clean and sharp, just what I need – but it doesn’t seem to support alpha and puts a green background in.
This feels like it ought to be terribly simple, but I’ve spent a few hours and can’t work it out! Has anyone else encountered the same problem?
I know it’s been stated before that animated gifs aren’t and won’t be supported (‘We won't be supporting the animated GIF format, just too much work for a niche feature like that.’). but I can’t see any alternatives for video game style stuff. It’s frustrating that full gif support is being dropped all over the place when there is as yet no replacement.
