Thumbnails take too long to load - Possible solution

I noticed that there is a cache for clip thumbnails under "docs and settings\app data\resolume avenue". What about an option to move this to a different location? This would allow me to place the files on a ram disk, SSD or high speed hard drive.
In the mean time, do you have any suggestions for speeding up thumbnail load time? My computer is often unusable for up to a minute during shows.

yeah this is one of the things i dislike, I like to keep everything on the same HD as i was to reduce the kit i use. Having a solution to this would be nice.
When i a clip is triggered you also have a stretched image that is under the clip properties tab, does this cause slow down too?
nice question you have posted DayVeeJay

That's never really bothered me. What bothers me is that the developers have been ignoring some of the most fundamental issues such as load time for decks and midi mapping issues. These problems have existed since the introduction of Avenue. We all love cool new features but they are useless until other issues are solved.

I can understand that you are frustrated with long loading times when it comes to deck switching, and we are aware that other people are too. We are however not ignoring this. If you read the change logs between R3.0.0 and R3.3.2, you'll see that on almost every release we have made improvements on deck loading. Aside from this, we are always trying new ways to improve it, and always appreciate your suggestions and ideas.
Now to answer your original question, the fundamental issue remains that in order to have an undefined number of clips available for immediate triggering requires some setup time for the video rendering engine. The amount of time is takes to load the thumbnails is not the bottleneck. Actually, one of the new approaches we're considering for R4 is to have all thumbnails load immediately, but this would mean you would not have all the clips available for immediate triggering after first switching to the deck. We'd love to have some feedback on this, since we're not quite sure what is preferable in this matter.
I hope that explains the situation a bit.

and maybe an option that resolume can load thumbnails from a jpeg file with the same name. Would be very fast!

I think for res 4 something i would like to see is something similar to res 2 in the functionality of 20 clips per deck and pretty unlimited decks. load speeds were so fast even when i was on a slow machine and i really came to like that way of vjing.
I read the interview with eyesupply and they asked for a lite* version of res 3 (basically the same gui as res 2) and i think that idea is fantastic! (i miss the colour scheme too)... im going off topic now...
anyways thats my 50 pence on this... but res 4 just sounds good and i have no idea what it will even look like!!!

Joris,
Please correct me if I am wrong. A deck of clips is unavailable for use until they are all loaded into memory (RAM?).
In your opinion, what hardware (listed in most important to least important) is the most crucial for speed of Resolume?
I LOVED the old interface. It was an amazing layout for hardcore video mixing. I would really like to see the ability to select a layer, and choose any clip from the deck. It would save me from having to place duplicate clips in a deck.I'm sure everyone has their preference however.

Why not using:
Menu->Composition->Clip Target->Active Layer ?

One of the things they mention as part of that request is 'with the same speed as Avenue'. And this is something that people tend to forget about when comparing R2.41 and R3. R2.41 is great, but these days we also want higher resolutions at higher fps. In order to reach 60 fps on HD resolution we need to use hardware accelerated rendering.

It's not related to RAM. It takes a little while to prepare the clips for rendering via hardware. To keep things on-topic, in theory the clip thumbnails can be shown immediately, you'd just need to wait a similar amount of time before you can all trigger them without lag. Is that something you'd rather see as the default behaviour?

In my opinion the GPU power and disk read speed have the most noticeable impact on performance. CPU power and amount of RAM do influence things, and more is always better, but the result is less noticeable.

How about load them greyed out, perhaps saying 'loading' on top?
Also, I think this is somewhat related (but maybe requested before), have an option on the menu to not load the last set each time the program starts.
