Can't register Avenue on OSX 10.7 Lion - SOLVED

Having problems getting Resolume Avenue registered. We contacted support (I'm helping a graduate student friend who want to use Avenue for his research), but it's like they didn't even read the problem description, so I'm posting here, hopefully someone from the community can help me. This is a slightly reworded version of what was sent to support:
I tried registering Resolume Avenue on our show controller (Mac Mini running OSX 10.7 Lion)
with the serial number give to us by Resolume , but both the online and "offline" registration failed.
I went to Preferences -> Registration, entered the serial, but it gave me an error about not being able to write to a file (can't remember the exact path). I clicked on Register a couple more times, same thing. I read a suggestion on the forum here that there are some problems with registering in OSX 10.7. I tried the suggested solution, which was to repair permissions using Disk Utility. Afterwards, I tried the same registration process, same error message.
I then tried using the Offline Registration button, which launches a
web page where I enter the serial number and an auto-generated
authorization code, saves the registration.txt file it generates, and
then open it in the Registration window. Everything went well until I
tried to get it to read the registration.txt file. Nothing happened,
no error message, no sign of success. I tried it once or twice more,
and then it started giving me an error message:
"The serial is registered too many times. Please contact mail@resolume.com"
So we did. And they wrote back:
"We have raised the limit on your Resolume serial so you can go ahead
and enter it again."
... which doesn't have anything to do with the cause of the problem, so if we try registering again, it's just going to fail again.
