Just wanted you to know that if you change the .mp4 suffix of videos to .mov you can import and play the file in Avenue 4

THANKS vjloco
This is GREAT, it's very useful as some DJ's have their own videos and they want you to play but it is in MP4 and, it happened last weekend, I Spent lots of time converting to MOV, taking some RAM.
FANTASTIC, tks

We use Quicktime to open the .mov files, as you know Quicktime can handle much more formats and it doesn't really look at the extention but at the content. So many formats will actually play if you rename them to .mov. Of course it's not recommended.

In the case above, if someone hands you a folder full of mp4s, it's really useful to be able to play them in Avenue instead of having to convert them all. Is there a technical reason why we should not do this?
I would think that the more formats Avenue can open, the more flexibility the user has. I remember that in Res 2 you could open many formats, and it was great.

the problem is that an mp4 has normally not the right settings for vjing...
keyframes every 1 frame can be set but normally is set every second or so... so you can't scratch the video, play smooth backward and so on.
if you just want to play the clip and you have no performance problems, nothing speaks against leaving the files in mp4 format, but if you have the time, it's better you convert the files...

sure it would be fine to habe a wider range of codecs available (other software is also able to use mpeg encoding over gpu for example), but i think working with one codec which is created for the software (dxv) should be clearly the best solution ;)

There goes so much work in supporting all kinds of formats. And the thing is like 'HerrNieDa' syas they won't work very well. So we'll get much more support mails asking us why this dodgy mpeg file they find on the net does not work. So we try to educate our users a bit by recommending certain formats and explaining why, in the end the users benefit more from this. Of course if we find a nice way to support a popular format we will.
