EMERGENCY MASK NEEDED!

Help!
I have a customer with me, and cant figure something out...
I need to put a fixed mask on a clip, but one that is NOT applied at the same size as the clip. Like an overall mask for removing edges on a clip.
I have a clip that plays in an area of my screen, but now we want to use a kind of videowall effect and multiply the image many times. But wee need this effect to stay in the same area as the original clip. When I add any effect, its multiplying out the image ver the whole screen:
I REALLY thought that using the fixed image mask and dropping it onto that slot would do this...
Im sure there must be a way to do this as so many of you do NOT want to stick to the normal 4:3 screen shape...
Whats the trick..?
