opacity issue

Ok I searched for this issue and didnt see it but I apologize anyways if I missed something..
I was on a show this weekend using a comp with 3 layers.. mainly I had either layer one or layer two at full opacity and every now and then I had layer three up at ~80% opacity. I started to notice with some consistency that my layer three would just cut out. the opacity slider on my screen still said 80% but the clip was gone. If I wiggled the slider on my midi controller a little bit, it would pop back. If I took layer 3 all the way to 100% it would not cut out. Only when I had it slightly faded. wierd.
