blackmagic Intensity Shuttle, How to record a Resolume show?

OK, so I can't use the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle to input a live camera and output a live Resolume show.

But surely I can use it to record a live Resolume show if I have 2 laptops?

We have been trying to output from a Macbookpro running Resolume 4 through the Thunderbolt to HDMI adaptor, through the HDMI cable to the Shuttle and into a 2nd Macbookpro.

We can't get any input on the 2nd laptop. Are we doing something wrong? Does anybody know if this is possible?

Here is a video of our procedure / problem;

I am also sending the question to Blackmagic.

Thanks to the forum for clarifying my last question so quickly and posting the Sticky.

I'm sure you tried any other input formats inside of black magic media express? without changing the output signal of your first laptop......! I had such a bug....

And I can be sure that you even tried another output....for example SD...with your output laptop? + set this input configuration in media express?

.....sorry I have to ask this!

As far as I understand it, this is not really a Resolume problem. The problem is with the Intensity not recognizing the signal coming from your laptop, regardless of what software is running on that computer. You probably have to change your secondary monitor settings. I'm sure BlackMagic can tell you what configuration/secondary monitor setup should work for you, as the Intensities can be pretty finicky when it comes to this.

Good luck.

and btw.... I would be really surprised if your recording macbook can record an uncoded FullHD stream....
I tried to capture a Full HD GoPro signal with an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD...... no luck... the record interrupted constantly because the SSD write speed was to slow.

Then I've tried a Raid-0 with two SSDs Plextor M3P.....that was okay...and I could record the uncoded stream.

Good Luck

Yes, I'm realising now that this isn't a Resolume problem. Still, it might be helpful to others experiencing the same problems with the same set-up. I know lots of VJs would love to record their live sets without dropping out frames.

I have tried to match the video settings on both the laptops in just about every variation possible, such as 720p 50FPS or 1080i 50FPS or 1080p 25FPS

I can't see a single frame on my capture laptop. I can output from laptop1 to my TV using the same HDMI cord.

One last observation, I can't even record into the Shuttle with a HDMI cable from a DVD player. The DVD player will play through HDMI to the TV as well. The DVD player won't play through the HDMI cable into the shuttle. BUT I can record from the DVD player to the Shuttle using an S-Video cable.

If you wan't to see the ongoing drama, I made another video. But I'll stop bothering you now. Thanks 4 the response.

Could you possibly have HDCP on your laptop?

Could you possibly have HDCP on your laptop?

Its a no go if you do. But there are workarounds for it. Although not quite cheap for some.
If you think you got HDCP enabled, try researching HD Fury.

If you think you got the output resolution(laptop) and the input resolution(BlackMagicDesign Shuttle) is exactly and properly matched you probably got a refresh rate that is not compatible.

Wierd scenario is that in my system some matching refresh rates would not work. How I know? I had similar problems of not working , although everything (in/out) matched . When I tried a lower framerate of 24, it worked. :o

Well , just wanted to share.
Hope it helps.

Blackmagic gear can be very fussy about what it receives.

I have not managed to get a laptop to output to some BMD gear using a DVI to HDMI adapter.
It only seems to work when using a HDMI or Display port output.

This could be the problem that you are converting from Thunderbolt to HDMI. If you have access to another computer with a native HDMI out, it would be worth trying that to see if it works.

The DVD player will most likely not be outputting due to HDCP settings on the player.

Monitors and TV's have built in scalers so tend to accept most signals where as the capture devices don't so they are quite fussy.

Here's part of the reply I got from BMD;

"It could be HDCP. It seems like all your settings are correct.
.....
HDCP is an extreme annoyance and just makes it difficult for 99% of users of have legitimate reasons for capturing HDMI source content.
"

I tested a Macmini also which had an HDMI port built in. I tested and synched between both computers using 1080p at 24 FPS and 720p at 50 FPS as well as other settings to no avail.

I will look into HD Fury more when I have some more $, thanks for that tip.

F_CK HDCP, F_CK IT'S STUPID F_CKIN ASS OFF.

Sorry for venting.

Ok, next work around to try, outputting from Resolume to the Shuttle through S-video and then to my consumer DVD recorder. No, that doesn't work either because Resolume won't output to the Shuttle.

I'm screwed, we've been wanting to record our live show for sooooooooo long now, so we can promote ourselves, and get paid for gigs to pay for our VJ gear. Looks like that dream is still on the horizon.... one day....

hmmm...sounds really annoying......I have to make a suggestion:
Maybe you should also think about record your gigs with a videocamera...and cut/mix them in post with some of your self-made clips........this should also work to impress your potential customers.

Thanks cosmowe, that's a good idea and we're trying to do that more. Some of our biggest and most impressive shows are online on a video streaming service called Moshcam, but so far we haven't been able to catch that stream, it's not easy to grab like Youtube. But you are right, we should strive to video ourselves the next time we get the opportunity. And we should also experiment with videoing our work on a TV and also projected onto a screen at home to see what the different results look like and use for the edits. Thanks for your ideas.
