Preferred video format?

Most of my sourced files are mp4, so I have to convert them. Not a big fan of changing the file extension to mov, seems kinda sketch.

I know Resolume recommends the dxv codec but after doing some test conversions, I unfortunately realized I currently do not have the hard drive space to use that format right now.

Any recommendations on a file format/codec that will work well with Arena and other popular software without massively inflating the size?

Thanks! :)

Sketch?

MP4's are an awful codec to be using for performing live visuals as they are highly compressed which puts a heavier load on your machine as they decompress them for playback. Arena and other popular software such as Modul8/Arkaos/VDMX all like various flavors of quicktime such as PhotoJpeg and in the case of Resolume DXV.

Space is cheap man, spend a tiny amount for a larger drive.

Sketch meaning sketchy. Doesn't seem like a good idea to just edit the extension rather than converting the files (seen that suggested in some places)

Unfortunately I can't afford a larger HD at the moment, will have to wait until after the holidays :( Looking for a temporary solution until then.

Thanks

If your comps aren't too demanding, try QT Photo JPG at 75.
I occasionally use that in low res clips where DXV compresses fine lines into oblivion.

If you are using simple graohic animation you could di it via Flash SWF what would need no more than 1MB ;)

In the team I'm working we agreed besides DXV (what is definitely a bomb codec) for QT H264.
