Thanks for the replies. We tried using battery only with the external power supply disconnected and the noise is still there, so it is not a ground loop problem. We also tried disconnecting external hard drive. My son says the noise was not always there and came about fairly recently, so he suspects ...

Yes, Resolume 2.41 and the previous version.
Refresh rate is 60Hz, no choice. Selecting different aspect ratio has no effect.

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop, Intel Core2duo 1.6Ghz, 256Mb graphics card, 1Gb ram. OS is XP 32 bit. The noise is there even without playing music, just with the program open. There is no noise at desktop or with any other application tried so far, Adobe Premier for instance.
