Simplest way to re-encode .mov files for alpha channel?

Post by nickharambee »

Hi

I have done a bit of searching about this forum and it isn't obvious to me as to the simplest method of re-encoding some .mov files which have a black background using the Quicktime PNG codec so that I can get an alpha channel which will be recognised in Resolume (I am aware that transparency is coming to the DVX codec soon but I can't wait til then).

I have successfully added an alpha channel using After Effects, by using the UnMult plugin which removes the black background, and then encoding using Quicktime PNG with RGB + Alpha/Millions of Colors+, but wonder if there is a simpler method (as I have a lot of files to do) of just re-encoding the .mov file using Quicktime PNG with Millions of Colors+ such that the transparency will work. I have tried with MPEG Streamclip (I am on a Mac), but I didn't get a transparency.

Thanks

Nick

i would have fixed this with the linear color key, but your plugin sounds a bit better!

i don't know if there are other ways/tools to do this work. I think there are no other ways because this is not a very conventional method/function in video-business ;)

Not sure if this meets your quality expectations, but you could try it out. Plus there is no need to re-encode - just apply the key effect live :)
