Workflow in Windows for creating DXV with alpha

Post by ROTOR »

Hey!

I'm trying to render my footage out in DXV with alpha. I was using AE CS5 for that which gave poor results (final result had a lot of dropped frames + no alpha). So I thought about render out a PNG Sequence. But now the problem: What program would be best to put the PNG Sequence together again and save them as DXV on windows. VirtualDub doesn't support Quicktime, so - try AE CS5 again [where I had the problem with the alpha]?

I am using Windows 7 x64, After Effects CS5 x64 - Resolume 3.2.

Cheers,

ROTOR

Thanks for the tip - I tried this application but it doesn't support PNG-sequences with alpha as I can see.

OK, it's an 'unsupported' supported format. But I have still problems with the alpha channel. Resolume actually shows that there is an alpha channel (means I'm able to disable it) but there's no difference.

Is it a problem with my 64bit OS? AE? I am also not able to get into the codec settings [no window's opening or a blank only] - any solution for that? I have turned off UAC btw as described in another thread - no difference here.

Would be great to have the alpha channel - it's what I've been waiting for since DXV has been introduced - now I'd really like to use it as well

its a bit of a black art this one :)

i got DXV with alpha to render out of CS5 by doing the following steps.

install quicktime pro
open any video file in quicktime pro player
choose export as qt movie from the file menu
go into the codec settings and choose DXV
go advanced and tick the box that says use alpha
render the clip (don't think you need this step)
close QT pro
open AE
now the setting of the use alpha tick box is remembered from the QT pro export so when you export as DXV the codec doesn't throw out the alpha. (make sure your in millions of colours+ and the channels are set to RGBA in the standard AE export settings.

(the above is from memory and some of the buttons / boxes might have slightly different names!) This fix is permanent AFAIK - i've rebooted loads since i did this and my CS5 still renders to DVX with alpha without problems

Thanks a lot! - that did the trick [quicktime pro + preserve alpha option in export dialog].

Yes we have just fixed this and it will be available in version 3.3. Which will be released when it's done.
