i've been hunting around and maybe i'm just searching for the wrong things, but more or less what i'd like to do is have a layer that can mask all other layers with BMP/PNG etc. eg: be able to have content running, but with a png mask overtop so that it only plays underneath the mask.
is this possible? i've tried importing png masks which doesn't seem to work (maybe i'm saving them wrong?) and using every layer mode possible, but it isn't working.
help?

PNG files can behave different to what you might expect, especially when you're just starting out. Try a black and white JPG. Everything you make black will become transparent, everything you make white will remain visible.
Hope that helps.

And yeah, the manual is also a good starting point.
