macbook air

Post by niclinn75 »

Hi
Was going to buy the new Macbook air (intel graphics 3000 processor 1.6GHz dual-core i5 )

Was wondering what peoples experiences are using Resolume on it?
I did a search on here and weirdly there was absolutely nothing about it!

Please let me know cos its one of the main reasons i'm buying the computer, because my current macbook pro cant handle running music software and resolume at the same time for my live performances, so i'm getting the macbook air solely for the purpose of running resolume and i need to know it'll be ok.

Thanks :)

why not just by a full sized laptop, and add an SSD to it?

you'll get better performance, the specs of the air are pretty low...

Thanks for your quick reply :)

The reason I was going for the air was mainly price, my friend can get a special discount on mac products and the air seems to be so much cheaper than buying another macbook pro. It means i can get one for around £400

I'm only running 4 minute .mov clips , no effects or anything, no layering. just a 4 minute ready made clip, one for each of my songs in my set.

can the macbook air handle this? or i suppose the other option would be a second hand 13" macbook or something like that?

ok here are my choices. I definitely cant buy a brand new laptop just for resolume.
I just want to know which is best out of these:

New macbook air

1.6 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
2gb memory
Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory2

Refurbished macbook 13"

2.26 GHz Intel core 2 duo
2GB memory
Graphics processor: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

Fujitsu Esprimo mobile V5535

1.6 GHz Intel Pentium dual-core ProcessorT2330
1GB memory
Graphics: SiS Mirage 3+ Graphics, up to a max. shared memory of 256MB

Thanks

I would never buy a computer with shared VRAm for VJing purposes. You may just be triggering clips at cue points now, but you are doing so with a very powerful software (resolume).. why?

If it's because you think you'd like to explore VJing and the creative outlet it can offer you, then get a decent computer, get a machine with dedicated video RAM

If you are using resolume just for clip triggering and don't have ANY desire to explore it's functions any further, then I'd suggest you look into a cheaper playback app, like VLC. Then you won't need to upgrade your hardware in two weeks, once you discover some of the awesome features of R4

The problem with VLC is I cant trigger it by midi right?

I have to be able to trigger my clips via midi and thats why i like resolume so much, i really like the midi mapping options.

I have used some of the effects too, just not in a live set up. When I was creating my clips for my live show in imovie i took some bits id made earlier in resolume utilising some of the great effects.

I'm not a DJ i'm a musician and i have a projector and screen as part of my set up , and I just have a midi note in logic triggering the clip in the "piano mode" in resolume.I will never use Resolume as a live VJ tool.

heres a clip of me live , you can see the visuals behind me :D

I have a macbook pro, and for the last gig i had that playing 8 stems of audio and resolume avenue at the same time and it worked until the encore! and then the audio and visuals kept stopping, to stop this happening again i thought it best to get another computer to run resolume of.

It has to be a mac because i still want logic on the macbook pro to trigger resolume on the other laptop so they have to be able to talk to each other so its gonna be a whole lot easier if they are both macs, so i guess what im asking is : If all i'm doing is triggering these 4 minute clips do I definitely need another macbook pro? will the much cheaper macbook air do?
I can still use resolume on the macbook pro when i'm creating my clips at home ,utilizing the effects and all the stuff that requires dedicated video ram but when it come to triggering the finished clips live will something cheaper like a macbook air do?

if not i will just look at getting a reconditioned macbook pro, just wanted to be sure first of all thats all :)

Thanks
