Free up system resources by bypassing layers??

Free up system resources by bypassing layers??

Does R4 work that way? If a layer is bypassed or its transparency 0% would it still tax the system? I have 3 layers for inputs and 3 for clips, wondering if it would help to bypass some when not in use.

some time ago i read something about this, at 0% (think also bypass) the playing clip should be not processed.
From my feelings it maybe takes a bit performance having more layers... so if you always use only 3 of the 6 layers it should perform quiet well i think.... the best case is if you try it before ;)

Yeah, I have been running 3 clip layers and two input layers on top of that, just added a 3rd capture card so yeah doing the stress test now. :P If anyone can confirm that bypassing frees up system resources I would be grateful. Cheers-

The layer is not rendered when bypassed but the clip that might connected to that layer is being played though.
So bypassing layers will make the OpenGL rendering quicker but clips playing in the layers will be still be processed, so there will be still disk access when playing video clips.

and if the clip gets paused? maybe a auto-pause or auto-disconnect checkbox if the clip is not shown would save performance....

You wouldn't always want to pause a clip when the layer is disabled. But what's the point of bypassing the layers if you just trigger the clip when you need it. If you want to save resources just play the clip when needed.
But maybe you have a specific use case for when this would be useful?

If you are using a MIDI controller you should be able to assign the layer pause to an exact slider value using range (should work in theory, haven't tested it)
