Pc to Mac - Ethernet/Midi

Hey Guys,

I have finally started my AV project and I want to connect Ableton to Resolume and have a fully integrated show. I have no run into a problem using midi over ethernet.

The Pc runs Ableton and the Mac Resolume.

I have been able to connect the 2 computers via an ethernet cable and share files etc but I'm really stumped on getting the midi to communicate between the 2 applications.

I have been using Audio Midi Monitor on Mac and rtpMIDI on PC.

Both of the midi applications dont seem to be picking up the correct port.

Below are some screenshots so you can see what i mean.

The Pc Midi app is showing midi yoke as live routings.

and these are the routings i am getting from my Mac.

So they have connected by the looks of it but i keep getting the error message on my PC saying 192.168.0.3:5004 has not answered the connection request.

I'm really lost as to what i need to do now. Does anyone know? had similar problems?

I have looked at many other threads and followed this one but to no avail.

but i can see something similar has been done in this video but the explanation isn't too good which is a shame because this is what I am after.

Hi Basic,

your screenshots show that the rtpMIDI session is not enabled,
therefore the connection to the mac is not established ( this
can be seen because the peers are grey in the participant box)

I also don't understand what you want to use the live-routing
for - this only meant to be used to allow a midi-device that
is connected to the local computer( like keyboard for example)
to be connected to a remote computer.

rtpMIDI creates virtual midi ports all by itself that can be seen
by your daw-software like any other midi-device, so no external
loopback midi cable necessary...

Last not least - why did you not install Bonjour, like both rtpmidi's
installer and also the tutorial on rtpmidis homepage suggest?

From your screenshots I would presume the 192.168.0.3 is the PC whereas the 192.168.0.2 is the
Mac. So if you received this error-message then you tried to connect to yourself (probably the
"laptop-PC(1)" session that can be seen as grayed out, but not found in your session list anymore
because you probably deleted it)

This is only necessary with network-MIDI tools that are not acting as a virtual MIDI device (like rtpMIDI
does). rtpMIDI creates a virtual MIDI-port on your local PC that is named like the field "Local name".

After you have created the port, you can start your music-application and should find the port in the
list of MIDI-devices ( if you have started your application prior to enabling the session, you will need
to restart your application, because it won't re-enumerate existing MIDI-ports after it has started)

So unless you want your local "real hardware" MIDI-devices to be available on the network for other
computers to use, you can just ignore the "live-routings" and leave them empty...

That is no problem unless you have a wrong ip-configuration either on your mac or on the PC-side.

In your screenshot I see the title of rtpMIDI saying "using lightweight mDNS". Either Bonjour
is not installed at all, or for some unknown reason you have deactivated the Apple-Bonjour
service on your PC. If that happens, rtpMIDI tries to use it's own lightweight implementation
of mDNS ( Bonjour being the Apple trademark for multicast DNS = mDNS )

If Bonjour is not installed, you can download it at:

Wow you sorted it for me. I did have originally have Bonjour installed but unistalled, reinstalled and it just worked straight away so thank you!
