Resolume 5 DMX Control

Post by Benjaminn »

Hi,

Just in the process of installing a Resolume 5 system in a nightclub triggered via Artnet from a ShowCAD Artist PC lighting controller.

For the most, everything is working perfectly as expected however I seem to have an issue with sending BPM syncing commands to Resolume.

I've created a cue that pulses the BPM Tap channel to Resolume. The 'TAP' button on Resolume's user interface flashes as expected however the BPM does not alter. The bar counter continues to step through so it is not that the BPM has been paused.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Ben

It takes two taps to set the BPM so you need to send two pulses at the appropriate interval to set your BMP accordingly.

Or you can set it using BPM. Default is channel DMX #15 and the range is 2-500 DMX value 60 = 120 BPM.

Keep in mind that since DMX is 256 the range is 2-500, that means 0=2, 60=120, 255=500 and everything else in between is going to give you decimal BPM values.

Hi Oaktown,

Appreciate the reply,

As stated in the original post, I've created a cue that does pulse the tap channel (step one: DMX level 255, Step two: DMX level 0, with an interval period between the two steps of half that of the tap rate so that a complete cycle of the steps equates the desired rate). This shows the TAP button on Resolume's interface flashing at the rate I want it to be at BUT the BPM value does not change.

Unfortunately the option to set an absolute value for the BPM is not an option as it is to accompany live DJ sets so the BPM will vary greatly and not be at precise levels.

Tap is a DMX event so any value higher than 0 triggers an event and I think you might need to zero out between events so that would mean you probably need 3 steps:
  • step 1=255 (or any value greater than 0)
    step 2=0
step 3=255 (or any value greater than 0)
Give it a test and let me know if that works.

Yeah that's what I have done but didn't work ;)

0 is just to reset your DMX value so that you can trigger another event which means the time interval between 255 and 0 shouldn't have any incidence on your BPM. The interval that matters is between the first 255 (or any value between 1 and 255) and the second 255.

I don't have access to a lighting console at the moment but I tested with OSC and it seems to work fine but OSC doesn't have to be 'reset' so that might make a difference.

I fully appreciate that (which is why the 2 steps are set at half the rate required so that the time between the frist 255 and second 255 are that of the desired BPM) but, as I have said before, I am seeing the 'TAP' button on the interface flashing at the desired rate (as if I was clicking it with a mouse). As such the step sequence I have outputting DMX is working as expected. HOWEVER, the BPM rate is not adjusting to the rate at which the 'TAP' button is flashing at.

I am very grateful for your responses, but please be aware that this is not the first time I have programmed a media server to be triggered from a DMX controller (far from it!). Merely Resolume 5 is not responding in the way I would expected and I want to confirm if there is something additional I am missing or if it is in fact a bug in the software.

I can't get it to work with DMX either so either we're both approaching it the wrong way or there is a bug in the software.

Maybe the resolume developers can jump in and let us know how to make it work.

We're looking into it, as we speak.

Don't worry, Bonne is all over this like a bad rash. If there's a bug, she'll find it. And probably two other bugs in the process.

There is indeed some buggyness going on when controlling the bpm section with dmx. This will get fixed for next update.

For now you could consider a work around by using MIDI or have some patience.
