BPM transport without audio?

Post by autograf »

I have been creating clips that are 100bpm at 25fps 1280x720 and use a click track when creating them. I output as DXV 3 but with no audio. When I drop them into Resolume it doesn't get the bpm right so I manually type in 100 and then often have to change the speed with the /2 button next to it. My question is if I leave the click track on the clip will it eat up more processing power? It would be nice to have the click track when performing live to help sync to the music playing and also to help Resolume get the bpm right. I am running a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB

When a clip has no audio track, you cannot set the speed in BPM, only in beats. The difference is BPM is counted in beats per minute, beats are counted in beats per whole clip.

So instead of making your content to a certain BPM, you can make your content to a certain amount of beats. Resolume will always try fit your clip into the nearest multiple of 2 beats (4 beats, 8 beats, 16 beats, 32 beats etc).

If you don't like to work like that, there is almost no overhead in having an audio track baked into your clip. In Resolume, the CPU is generally waiting for the GPU anyway, so it'll have something to pass the time with :)

Thanks for the input what do most people use beats or bpm what are advantages and disadvantages of both. I come from djing so bpm just made sense to me originally. If my clip is 16 beats at 100 bpm would I get the same result typing in 16 beats as I would exporting with a click track and setting to 100 bpm?

An audio track is usually longer, as in a few minutes, so it makes more sense to talk about BPM to determine how two tracks line up together. If the BPMs are way off, you know they won't gel wel in a mix.

A video loop is usually shorter, and can be pitched quite far up and down without really losing quality. So it makes more sense to talk about how many 'visual beats' are in it, rather than what BPM it was made at.

Yes.
