I would assume you could only trigger via, midi, osc, dmx, autopilot or columns if collapsed.

I think the best way would be to have two colapse modes:
- an "expanded" mode (actual)
- a minimum collapse (layer is collapsed to a line);
- a medium collapse (each clip is collapsed to a button that can be clicked).

I think double-clicking a layer name would toggle between these modes, or something like that.
