Playing Videos from a SSD Drive in Resolume Avenue

Post by Lumenarius »

I am curious what the take is for the question of whether it is a good idea to play videos and visuals from a modern SSD when using Resolume Avenue or Arena?

I ask this because sometimes a computer's hard drive gets full. It is far more straight forward to attach a SSD drive then it is to open it up, put in a new drive, and then restore the OS and all the files even though that would be solid.

There are a few posts about this but most are from a few years ago when the SSD drives available were not as fast.

Right now I am working with a "SAMSUNG T7 Shield 4TB Portable SSD - 1050MB/s" which has USB C Gen 3.2

Will this work for playing a single video layer in Resolume?

My video is 3200 x 3200 in the DXV format at 30 FPS.

Would that be too crazy or is it totally fine?

Just looking for an easy way to scale the drive size as these files are YUGE nowadays.

Thank you!

I would never trust a show from an external drive. Ever.

Thanks for the quick reply.

In your opinion why is this?

Is it simply because of the transfer rates when comparing an external drive to an internal drive?

Transfer Rates, i_o can hang especially with a lot of throughput. Thermals also isn't great, and I hate having an entire show be crippled by having a small usb cable come unplugged due to bass or just working environments in general.

Totally hear that. In my experience some smaller resolution files do okay but anything 4K or above really can hang.

Would not want to leave a permanent installation like this nor rely on it for a serious live show.

Perhaps this will change in the future though I wanted to start a thread on this and leave some cookie crumbs as I could not find anything.

Thanks for your input!
