Are you using active or passive adapters?

Also, on a slightly other note. I can run 4 layers of DXV3 1080p content at 60fps with 1 1080p output. The moment I click on the 5th layer. The FPS drop straight to 30. Any ideas? I'm using a 2015 macbook pro with El Capitan. I tried the same deck on another 2015 MBP with Yosemite and it dropped to 40fps instead of the 30fps on mine.

Thanks.

Not sure it will help but the AMD cards typically require active adapters if you use more than two displays

Can you describe the Macbook Pros you're using: GPU, Mac OS, how much room on your hard drive and Arena version?

Also, I'm assuming you have a discrete GPU on your MBP, correct?
Why don't you install this software to check what's going on with your GPU: https://gfx.io/

Hey

I have the 2015 mbp with the r9 discreet cards.

I've tried it out on arena 4.2,5 and 5.1. Same issue. But update. I've updated to the latest version of El capitan and instead of 30fps I'm getting 40fps. But it's just the sudden drop that seems weird.

I have 500gb free. Im using the 1tb ssd that comes with the mbp.

I'll download the software and check it out.

I used to have this on my old 2011 MBP as well. Three 1080p clips would chug along nicely at 60fps, adding a fourth would drop it down to 30 in one fell swoop. Now on El Capitan I get a steady decline.

One way to track down your bottleneck is to use Solids instead of loops. If you get the same drop, you know it's rendering/graphic card related. If you don't, you know the bottleneck is disk access related.

I just tested a 1920x1080 DXV 3.0 (normal quality wiht alpha) clip on my MBP with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB and here is what I get:
  • 1 through 6 layers: 60 FPS
    7 layers: 57FPS
    8 layers: 50 FPS
    9 layers: 42 FPS
    10 layers: 36 FPS
    11 layers: 32 FPS
    12 layers: 27 FPS
Now if I disable global effects & blend modes I get:
  • 1 through 10 layers: 60 FPS
    11 layers: 53FPS
    12 layers: 30 FPS
    13 layers: 27 FPS
But I get a lot more fluctuation in the FPS once I add the 12th layer.

And for the record, I haven't upgraded our MBP yet because I just don't want to go back to using Resolume Arena with an AMD GPU. I've spent way too many hours trying to make compositions run stable with AMD cards on PCs and all the issues magically disappeared when I finally switched to Nvidia cards.

Hey Joris,

So I just tried it out with a solid color. Same thing. 4 layers solid 60fps. The moment I hit the 5th one. It drops to 30fps. Is there a work around for this? This is with a single HDMI out.

With global effects and blend modes off I can get 8 layers with 60 fps and then a gradual decrease as I trigger more layers.

Thats pretty solid man. Looks like this could be an issue with the AMD cards.

Let me know if you get better results at all if you use active adapters.

I'm glad we've been having this conversation because I've been hesitant to replace our MacBoo Pro laptops that have the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB with the new model!

Tried using 2 active adapters as well, Sapphire and Accel.

Same thing.

I tried it with a projection mapping setup with 3 projectors.

2 DVI and 1 HDMI. It dropped straight to 30fps the moment I hit advanced and added the three screens. There were no visuals running as well.

With DXV visuals it was dropping to 20fps. This is pretty concerning.

Any update on this issue, I too am destined to 20 fps with the new macbook Pro with R9 graphics. Thats disappointing, guess I will be using my backup for this show.
The issue is the graphics is stable @ 60fps, then once a second screen is active, it drops to 30fps with a single dxv3 file. Getting 20 once another layer is active.
The drop to 20fps is normal, since my other machine drops to 50fps, with the same qc file(plexus)
comp 3840x1080 @60hz

Is the dev team looking into this?
