As I read the specs at https://pub.smpte.org/pub/st12-3/st0012-3-2016.pdf it's for embedded digital timecode
In a 48khz, 30FPS LTC wav, the short high/low states are about 10 samples. I don't think 120FPS SMPTE signal could make it in tact over an analogue signal chain, with 48kHz ADCs and DACs.
Most of the time you'll have to go analogue.
I could imagine some kind of network based TC though, where you're not limited by sample rates.
Frame rate interpolation on the other hand might be doable.

Re: 60fps timecode
That's good to know, I'm not very experienced in terms of sound engineering, so that info is very valuable to me :) You also wouldn't have to use 120FPS btw, that's just the maximum. You can just encode 60FPS with the new standard as well and it would fit in LTC too from what I can tell.
Still the way to get to 60FPS right now with ST 12-1 with being able to decode LTC 30FPS as 60FPS is totally possible and standard conform. Disguise does that as well btw. So me and lots of other headliner crew peeps I've been talking to are really interested in this.

Re: 60fps timecode
Yes, that's what I mean, if the TC is stable, intermediary frame timings could be calculated pretty good.
