Heating and freezing on Iris Pro MBP

Post by francoe »

Buyed yesterday a Mbp 2015, the base one with iris pro.
Factory yosemite installation + tg pro and paragon..no more things, pretty clean os.
No extra screen attached.

Tryed the R5 demo: hangs almost everything and freeze.
Cpu goes over 100% and temp rise 99°C (full fans work).
Restarted os, R5 do not freeze the system, runs fine, but still heat as hell.
Restart again, then R5 take 2 minutes to run. Full cpu work and freeze again.
Fps always over 60 in all cases.

Installed R4.2.1: Runs hot, but not frying eggs and no hangs or freeze.

Anyone tryed this machine? I wanna cry.

Macbooks are not very good dealing with heat, small fans, and they are designed so that the fans run slower thus quieter for better user experience.
As you get near 100°C the fans get run at full rpm, my dell does this at 70°C.
With a dedicated GPU the processor temp load would be smaller, you know your Iris pro is integrated in the CPU, also the dedicated GPU would handle resolume tasks better.
I would be interested how resolume performs with the iris, have you run the benchmark yet? viewtopic.php?f=11&t=11093

I use this tool to switch off the turbo boost in the CPU to keep my mbp temps lower (around 80-90°C)
at 100°C the cpu begins throttling anyway.

And a periodic re-greasing of the CPU and GPU is beneficial too, but that is likely not the cause with a half year old laptop.

Unfortunately the Intel Iris Pro Graphics integrated GPU can't handle much in terms of graphics processing so my recommendation to you if you plan to use Resolume with your MacbookPro would be to take it back (Apple usually has a good return policy) and get the one with the AMD Radeon R9 M370X GPU.

Thanks guys, that's good info.
Still no benchmark. I can't run a bench when computer is freeeze
I'm aware of what iris pro is, not expecting a gamer experience. But anyway, in other graphic tasks outperform the nvidia of my dell where R runs great.

In fact, I think there's something more going wrong here.
I've plugged an external disk, and installed win10 via bootcamp.
Installed R5, and still runs damn hot, but no hangs or freezes.
Fps are over 110, and task manager gives me 7-8% cpu load (I know, is avoiding the graphic task there).
If I set the economizer power mode, still have stable 40fps and silent fans.
Res 4.2.2 works great, not need to take down the power using economizer mode.
In other side, R5 over win open ups pretty fast, and osx version takes a lot of time even to load the demo clips.
Even more, all that overload happens independently if you're playing clips or not.
I will try to turn off the turbo mode on yosemite, but do you think can be another stuff I'm missing here?

(note: all this test are made using the demo clips of R5 as is).
