Struggling to set up an Ableton-Resolume network - urgent

I have a gig coming up next week where I need to sync Ableton and Resolume. For some reason I can’t get a stable network between my two MacBook Pros even though I’m using the same method as I did successfully 10 months ago.
I am using Audio MIDI Setup to connect the two machines together using the 'Network' function. One is my 2016 MacBook Pro running Sierra (for Resolume) and the other is a mid 2010 MacBook Pro running El Capitan (for Ableton). I have connected them via an Ethernet cable to Thunderbolt adapter. This setup all worked fine before but the newer machine was then on El Capitan.
I appear to have set up the Network session correctly - using port 5004 and creating master and slave machines. Each finds the other in the Network directory but I get an error mesage on the newer MBP which is in the grab below. Actually sometimes I get error messages on both machines relating to failed connections, sometimes just one.
I need to get this working urgently. It would be great if anyone has any advice on how I might move this on.
Thank you : )

that error message looks like it would show an IPv6 address that it is trying to connect to.
Do you run an IPv6 local network?

Thank you. I don't know what an IPv6 network is. I have my Macs connected on an Ethernet network via a router most of the time but when I'm connecting these two together for this purpose it is with a single Ethernet cable (with a Thunderbolt adapter at one end). No other network cable is connected. I haven't double checked to see if wifi was left on on either machine and it might have been trying to connect to something. How would I investigate whether I have an IPv6 network set up?
Thanks
ps - just had a look on the two laptops in System Pref/Network/Ethernet/Advanced/TCP/IP and nothing is configured under 'Configure IPv6'.

shouldn't really matter if you are running ipv4 or ipv6 as long as you have both machines set to the same subnet/ip address range.
In network preferences, select your adapter, go to advanced, then TCP/IP and since you are not using a router with a DHCP server you need to set the ipv4 configuration to manual,
then set the ipv4 address to 192.168.10.2 on the master 192.168.10.3 on the slave
subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 on both, router can be anything as you are not connecting to a router.
Disable/disconnect other adapters or set the adapter order so that you have the wired connection as the first.
You can find the order setting clicking on the gear icon below the adapters in network preferences.

Some of the earlier apple thunderbolt adapter seemed to have issues so I would make sure you have a newer one or use a USB3 to ethernet adapter which seems to be more reliable for our setups.

Looking at your pics, it looks like your slave doesn't have an IP address. It should read 192.168.2.X:5004 (since your master is set to 192.168.2.1:5004) so make sure you have your IPv4 configured properly in your slave network settings so follow Ravensc's directions.

Thanks guys - I've worked through ravensc guidance and it works! I now remember setting this up 10 months ago but had forgotten that part of the process. Since one of these machines will normally be networked via an Ethernet cable (with Thunderbolt adapter) to a router in my studio I guess I will need to create a second Ethernet netwrok setup for that? I remember once this network between the two machines was setup with IP addresses I could no longer connect to my main Ethernet network on that machine.
Thanks so much for all your help, particularly ravensc - I really value that and it has taken a weight off my shoulders - valuable

Why don't you introduce a small five port unmanaged 1G switch, Connect both computers and the router to the switch, then you assign static (reserved) IP addresses to both your computers in the router software using their MAC address?

I've been away for a couple of weeks but now revisiting this. I don't want to mess up the Ableton-Resolume network that is now set up nicely between my two MacBook Pros but since I did so I have never been able to connect to the internet on this machine using my Thunderbolt adapter to Ethernet cable to router setup. I could before I adjusted the IP address etc. What do I need to do to get internet back on this machine without screwing up the Ableton-Resolume network which is crucial to me. I can still use wifi on this laptop but want to get my wired internet connection back.
Thank you : )

Can you share all the details of the network setup for the two machines including WIFI?
