Asus ProArt P16 crashing with Resolume - advice from my experience

Post by philbearman »

I just wanted to share my experience with the ASUS ProArt P16 laptop in case it helps anyone else.

I initially experienced a major system hang every time I tried to do anything in the Advanced Output window in Resolume - I couldn't even get the task manager open to kill Resolume - the only option was to force the power off by pressing and holding the power button each time this happened!

After much messing around uninstalling and reinstalling of Windows and Resolume in various configurations without joy I decided to just do a clean install of Windows without any of the bundled ASUS bloatware. (Note that I tried to install as many bundled apps etc as possible but the crashing persisted).

It's worth mentioning that this laptop doesn't have Sonic Suite installed which has been mentioned previously on this forum for conflicts on ASUS systems.

I created a bootable installation USB using the Media Creation tool on the Microsoft website (note it needs to be on a FAT32 formatted USB stick in order to be bootable on the laptop), and installed only the drivers etc that were essential. Windows recognises the device, so there were no problems with licensing.

It's worth noting that you need to download and run the WLAN driver (from the ASUS website) on another computer to extract the driver to a USB stick which you can then use to insall the driver on the laptop in order to complete the Windows installation process.

After doing the clean install, Resolume has worked flawlessly, so there must have been some kind of conflict/interference from one of the bundled utilities, but I have no idea which!

I did take a look at the Resolume log file after a crash but there was nothing obvious in there to suggest that anything had gone wrong as far as Resolume was concerned.

It's early days with this ProArt laptop but hopefully it will be smooth sailing from here on!

Following up on this - although Resolume continued to run smoothly after doing a clean Windows install, I experienced various other unrelated issues/crashes including a 'blue screen of death' and have decided to return the laptop as this isn't what you expect from a brand new, relatively high-spec laptop!

Just as a final follow-up to this thread, I replaced the Asus laptop with a Lenovo Legion 7i which has been working perfectly with Resolume so far and has a lot less bundled bloatware than the other one :-)
