Confused about effects behavior

Post by vehemintMojito »

Does anyone have a detailed tutorial on effects behavior? They don't seem to be working as I expect them or they are potentially bugged.

Here are my issues. What I want to do is pretty simple: have the same 2 effects applied to a number of clips over a duration of time (these effects are controlled by MIDI already).

What I expect: I place the fx on the empty layers above the first clip and as autopilot moves forward from clip to clip the effects stay applied.

What happens: When the clip advances via autopilot the effect stops being applied (even though it is still selected).

I also tried apply the effects to the individual clips instead of on their own layer and same result! Here's a video of the latter:

as you can see once the clip advances the effects in the clip do not respond, even if applied to both clips

I found a work around where I can stack the fx in one layer but I don't understand why whatever layer that has the fx on it seemingly has to be selected for the fx to be active?

I'm not sure if I'm completely seeing what your issue is in the video. I see a (audio?) animated opacity parameter that will only jump in and show the edge effect once in a while.

If I understand you correctly, you want to have the clips on layer one play in sequence or autopilot and you want to be able to add effects on top on layer two and three. They should be applied to all the clips on layer one, independent of if they are on the same column.

I think I can give you some pointers. I included a screenshot to have a example.
Screenshot 2025-07-30 at 13.53.45.png
- if you only want to see the effects make sure you set your layer blend mode of layer 2 and 3 to Cut. This way layer 1 will be only the input of the effects, but won't shine through, which is a very different effect as a normal Add on 100% for instance.
- if you use a autopilot, use it on layer 1 or put layer 1 in a group if you wanna use columns. And then use the group columns instead of the composition columns.
- another option if you would like to use columns, would be to exclude layer 2 and 3 from column triggers (right mouse click on the layer) that way you won't accidentally play empty clip slots, and keep full control over those layers.
- and another good thing to point out if you use effects as clips, they will automatically contain a video router. This has some interesting options and can influence the way the effect works and affect your image/video.
Do you for instance, want the effect to be applied to everything underneath or only to a specific layer.
As a example, if you would set layer three to only affect layer two. It will only show that effect if there is a effect active on layer two if layer two is empty it won't show the effect of layer three this way you can make interesting combinations/stackings.

What I think happened in your case, is you used the general auto pilot. This will play all the clips slots underneath that column. If they are empty, that means they will eject the currently playing clip. Effect clips in your case effects.

I hope this will help you out if I misunderstood or you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask
