VJ nightmare

No, that's *not* my new nom du vide...

Weekend before last, I was VJing at the final monthly Sin! party when my machine started giving me trouble. Early on, my MIDI-in -- and thus ReAct -- disappeared, returning me to the days of keyboard-and-mouse control.

Worse, about 2/3 way through the evening, Resolume suddenlly locked up hard; I finally had to power-off the PC, as nothing I tried let me break back to XP, even. Upon rebooting, I discovered that most of my decks would no longer load.

When I tried to load straight from my clip files, I had an even ruder awakening: One of my 250 Gb SATA drives had somehow disappeared, taking with it my entire RAID 0 array -- along with most of my content. Fortunately I'm enough of a slacker that I hadn't yet deleted all footage from my system drive, so I was able to limp along 'til last call.

Unfortunately, among the clips I *didn't* have mirrored on C: were two promos I'd put together for Friction, the club inheriting Sin's second-Saturday slot at Club Hide... and for which I will be the promoter. This meant that during the busiest part of the evening, and in front of what should be the core of Friction attendees, I couldn't advertise the club.

Ironically, for the first time in ages I hadn't bothered to bring my full kit with DVD decks, mixer, Enhancer, cams, and the like -- in part because I wanted to have some fun at this show, but mainly because after I moved to MIDI control through ReAct, Resolume has become so stable I've rarely needed to go to other inputs.

Moral of the story is that I'm putting together a collection of backup decks consisting of clips located on my system drive; any custom or show-specific footage will also be duplicated...

Thankfully, it appears a loose power connector knocked out the drive. The Maxtors I'm using will take either standard SATA-style or traditional 4-pin connectors; since the latter seem to fit more securely, with a couple of Y-adaptors I'm rockin' all my drives old-school.

had a similar exerience.
resolume froze halfway through a gig and had to reboot, only to find that the hard disk was "gone".
i only have one SATA harddisk (partitioned into three drives) so when this disk was disconnected i couldnt even boot into windows at all.

i've heard that the SATA power connection isnt really reliable.
for me the solution was to remove the casing cover, and then unplug and replug the harddisk power cable. and this doesnt work 100% of the time either.
another solution was to wait before i boot up again, but this "method" could take about 10 or 15 minutes and i was in the middle of a gig.
