Problem with reverse playback mjpeg codec

Post by AtomX »

Hi all,

Im looking to pick peoples brains on a problem Ive been having with my setup. I have recently returned to Vjing to assist my partner with a live visuals project with a local Montreal band.

my setup is the following:

Macbook Pro 2.16 15", 1gb Ram, 256mb x1600
Resolume 2.4
Windows XP ( obviously) sp2
Pegasus Pic Video Mjpeg codec latest release

After experimenting with different codecs, compression and file sizes I decided to opt for Mjpeg codec. Unfortunately, I never tested playing backwards!
I have encoded all my footage at 80% quality, 720x576 25fps
Resolume is set to prcoccess at 800x600, and output at 800x600 16bit

Playback is smooth with 1, 2, and 3 clips( a little bit jumpy with 3) going forwards.

The problems begin when I try to play the clips in ping pong playback or reverse. At this point everything becomes rediculously SLOW like less than 1fps. This happens with only one clip loaded on only one deck. I have tried to reinstall codecs, use morgans codec for playback decoding, I have even tried testing on my shuttle workstation with the same and older versions of resolume and the problem persists.

Has anyone else noted extreme poor reverse playback from resolume with mjpeg? The clips that come with the resolume trial encoded with cinepack and windows media codecs play fine in reverse.( although at 320x240@15fps)

I have also tried experimenting with lower quality mjpeg compression ( 50% ) with the same resolution 720x576@25fps the same problem with almost the same slow speeds however forwards playback seemed to be faster when playback speed set to over 5pfps from resolume. I have tried dropping the output and process resolution to 320x240 still playing back the high quality footage and the problem is still the same. Playback fine forwards, terrible in reverse.

The only thing that made any difference at all was reducing the encoding reolution to 320x240 at 80% quality. Still however the reverse playback speed was too slow to use.

I dont understand? I thought mjpeg should lend itself well for scratching and such considering each frame is a key frame one at a time?

The clips are being played from the laptops internal hdd, and I have also tried storing them on an external HDD 7200rpm firewire.

Any ideas anyone... do I have to drop high resolution output and go back to cinepack? Please no.:help:
