Hardware "balance" using Resolume

Post by Anonymous »

When building a desktop-based computer dedicated only for Resolume usage (WinXP ubertweaked with nLite, almost everything stripped out) with a certain budget, should i go after CPU, GPU, RAM or HDD performance?

So far i've been thinking something like this:
CPU: A64 3800+
RAM: 1 Gig
GPU: ATI X600
HDD: 2 * WDC Raptor (RAID 0)

Should i go for more CPU-power and change GPU for a cheaper, like X300? And what do you think, is 2 * 10krpm RAID 0 an overkill for "normal" usage of Resolume (eg. 300x400 clips w/some effects + live video feed -> output 800 x 600)? Or is there too much memory (or too much everything) maybe?

Thanks for the help and sorry for my rusty english. :)

You don't need that fast of a graphics card. CPU is important, especially when dealing with effects and overlays. With that HDD setup you can easily push out rendering at 640x480 and whatever you scale it to has nothing to do with the power of your comp or video card. If you do set up a raptor raid 0 array, make sure that your system is on a seperate HDD - ie you probably want a 3rd disc for your system and resolume installation.

From my experience, I find that resolume actually runs better on windows 2000 (ubertweaked) than winXP. Also make sure you have a very good ventillation and cooling system on your pc. Things get hot after a while - especially those raptors.

Hope this helps...

been thinking the same thing, do you actually run Resolume on Win2k for live performances?? Had a few performance issues on a Nlite tweaked WinXP laptop.

Was wandering if I'd get any significant performance power & reliability with an ubertweaked Win2k

i used to run w2k for live performance, but now use a dedicated installation of wxp... the reason is driver support. New drivers are no longer being made for w2k, and i needed the newest drivers for my tv capture cards - they don't run well under w2k anymore... wdm support is also much better in wxp.

conclusion: windows still sucks (yay linux!), but a dedicated install of wxp is more than sufficient.

get yourself a dualcore, preferably intel (I have bad experience with amd's performance in resolume).
although resolume doesn't use dualcore, but as it takes all the power of procesor, 'extra' things like capture, MIDI etc will work much better.

and resolume doesn't utilise GPU - its all about processor power
