Gelredome [Arnhem - NL]

Post by XNDR »

During the 2006-2007 soccer season I did the "visuals" in the Gelredome during matches of Vitesse. The Gelredome has 2 enormous LED screens (40m2 each) fixed above the 2 goals. My MacBook is running custom software I wrote to display the score, clock and other game-related stuff. I use Resolume for all on-demand content such as logo-animations and editorial information.

I've attached a picture of the setup I use during the matches. Resolume isn't running yet, so I'll repost a picture after next match, if Vitesse succeeds during their upcoming play-off match against NAC Breda. I'm so totally not into soccer, but the whole media circus and publicity makes this a nice thing to be part of. We also have a live feed from Cinevideo/Talpa, with replays, which makes watching live soccer way more interesting ;-)

Here are a couple of extra shots that I think are interesting enough to post here ;-)

Hi,
Nice that Resolume is used during the soccer games.
Erg cool, moet wel erg leuk zijn met zoveel publiek.
Ziet er indrukwekkend uit.

Groet
Edwin

Hi gdlt,

You're right about the screen, it came down a few weeks after it had been installed. It's an interesting story, so here it comes:

We're good friends with the company that sold the screens, he explained how it happened. The screen is mounted on 2 heavy duty motors with 2 chains that are rated at a max. load of 5000 kg's each. So in theory the chains would have to hold a load of max. 10.000 kg's. The screen itsself weighs about 4000 kg's, so its way under the chain specs.

After the crash of the screen they investigated what could have caused the problem. They found out that one of the chain links had internal corrosion, which caused it to break one night... The sudden load on the second chain caused the other chain to break as well.

At the moment they're still in the process of suing the chain manufacturer for the financial damage. Thank god that the stadium was empty when it came down! It could have crushed a goalkeeper or a couple of party-people during a concert...

Now both screens have extra pins and heavier chains to prevent them from falling down again.. And yes, they have selected a different chain supplier ;)

I'm still VJ'ing at the level once or twice a month, but I'm very busy with some other interesting projects at the moment, so less time for fun and play :(

You're welcome to drop by, I can put you on the guestlist if you send me an e-mail or PM. Have you got a site somewhere? I'm curious what you've been doing...
