WikiPedia explains it well:
A video codec is software that enables video compression and/or decompression for digital video. The word codec may be a combination of any of the following: 'compressor-decompressor', 'coder-decoder', or 'compression/decompression algorithm'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_codec

Compression is needed on video to reduce the file size. When you save a video file you specify the file format (.avi or .mov etc) and the codec that will do the compression and decompression. For resolume we recommend using the PICvideo MJPEG codec or Indeo 5.1.

To see all the video codecs on your computer in windows you do this:

1. In Control Panel, double-click Sounds and Audio Devices.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Double-click Video Codecs
