Easiest/Best Way to Chop Bits of Video

Greetings resolumers!

I have lots of cool documentaries in various formats (divx/mpg/dvd/etc) that I would like to chop "samples" out of to use with resolume. I was wondering if any of you could recommend the best way to go about doing so!
