meaty laptop, slow video

have just bought a dell inspiron 8500 for live work.
it doesn't seem to be handling resolume very well.
have read some of the potential fixes on the discussion site.
external drive, changing from xp etc

what I want to know is what to try first!

any suggestions gratefully recieved.

spec is:

inspiron 8500
512 ram
2.4 ghz processor

make sure you use the right video files. check 'preparing media' in the manual.

good point but i done all that,
it's the right size and cinepak codec and keyframe every frame.
I forgot to mention my vid card is geforce to go 64mb

any thing else to try?
