Some thoughts on FreeFrame

Post by gpvillamil »

I'm finding that I really miss some of old Freeframe plugins in Res 3.

I understand that there are issues with using old Freeframe in Res 3 due to the OpenGL rendering path, specifically the need to readback a video texture in order to do "old-school" video bitmap operations, and then copy it back to the OpenGL renderer.

However, wouldn't it make sense to have the option to apply old Freeframe effects to videos after they are read from disk, and before they are handed over to the OpenGL renderer? Performance should be at least as good as Res 2.41.

Also - I am aware of some software that provided a "wrapper" for Freeframe that allowed it to be used in a hardware-accelerated video rendering path. I used this, and even with the readback stage, it did work very, very quickly.

i agree, i do miss quite a few of the old FF effects that we used. so might see us going nack to R2.3 when we need them for a gig.

it would be great if its possble to make a rapper for FF 1.0 to us them in R3 :)

I double that thought.

For me/ us Resolume was always the best vjtool, because we very often take our clips and shred them with massive filter usage. Simple Clip- Playback is provided by dozens of other Vj- Tools, i think.
And i guess it will take ages til there is an even half as massive amount of filters for ffgl (since there wasn´t just one before Reso3 came out and FF1.5 is now already aged half a year.)

I was even thinking about porting some old plugs by myself, but after some research i must say, that i´m definetly not capable of coding c++ and openGl.

So plz give us back our good old FF 1.0 (a wrapper would be ideal i guess!)

Well,

here is a list of my favorite effects at the moment. It´s not a list of what is really missing in R3 but an overview of what i use most besides all classic colorcorrection (which are definetly there in the new version).

- barshift
- rebelle
- huescale
- halftone
- christmas balls (with the balls.bmp replaced with some less ...well... christmas- like)
- szyzygy stripes (mainly effect stripes)
- grid of squares
- bloom/ glow
- burn
- dodge
- alpha trail or timetrails
- gaussian blur (or similar)
- delay RGB (I love this one, when it´s just on one colorchannel)
- random buffer

I would have much fun to code some of them by myself, but my code- horizon doesn´t get beyond script- languages like actionscript, java or python yet. I actually don´t even know which app to use to code freeframe- plugs (while i did mess around with programming directx- shaders for some vvvv- things i did).

Cheers, cznickesz

hi!
I would really love to have the "stopmotion" plugin again, or a similar which does a kind of strobe effect.

Yeah I miss the Rebelle and RGB Delay the most too. We're very curious to hear from more people what plugins you miss the most.

Yes, i love Pets wave plugin, and also the Glow/Bloom plugins.

as glow and bloom are basically just blur plugins, it shouldn't be to hard to do those as FFGL, with the added speed benefit.

i dont know what the hell petes Wave plug in does, but hopefully it will be able to be ported
