usb or firewire drive

so i think it is the speed of my drive which is slowing me out. (laptop)

am thinking to buy external drive.

can i get by with a usb one or do i need firewire.

my computer doesn't seem to have a standard firewire port. Seems to have a new one with different numbers.
this matter?

if your laptop supports USB 2.0 (faster than firewire) go for this option. A USB 1.0 hard drive will not do you good...

but this is dependent on the age of your laptop
