New Notebook for Resolume 3. Mac vs Windows???

hello guys,

resolume avenue ist great - saw some lovely features in the beta and i would love to use it in the future.
unfortunatly my old notebook is too low for resolume 3. - in 2.4 everything was fine but now its time to say goodbye and i have to buy a new one.

as you wrote you recommend a mac book pro. yesterday the new edition was presented and they seem to be very strong - but 2500 euro isn´t really cheap ,-)

on the other side there are some nice windows notebooks for less price and now im in doubt if they are good enough, or should i expend more money to get a mac book pro (newest generation) to avoid any problems using resolume 3 in the future?

forget someting:

i saw it is recommended to use an ati radeon card instead of nvidia card to avoid the black border around the video.

but if i buy a mac book pro i have a nvidia card too. is there any difference between nvidia cards on windows and mac notebooks, or is it the same??

I vj with a friend as a team and he's on a pc and i'm on a macbookpro. He's still running resolume 2.4 because we find that 3 is much more stable on my mbp. I run my resolume 3 output into his resolume 2.4 to mix. We crash about the same amount of times

So to summarize, I recommend a mbp now that resolume 3 is cross platform so you can run it in windows (boot camp) or mac os x as you desire. May not be cheap but it's a workhorse! Just be aware of the lack of s-video/composite adapters on the new mbp, so maybe buy a mbp that is one gen older to get around that issue and get a cheaper price?

So I just tested it out on two notebook

1) a 2.3ghz Intel Core Duo Barebones with 3gb ram, XP sp2 and an Nvidia 7400GO card with 256mb ram

2) a 2ghz Intel Duo Macbook Pro with 2gb ram, OSX 10.5.5, with Radeon x1600 with 256mb ram

Using the same 3 videos, 640x360, encoded by Squeeze 4.3 as Photo Jpeg and DXV codec and outputting to an old Samsung TFT which does 1280x1024

on the XP box it drops below 10fps with all 3 playing as PJpg and sits around 12 with DXV - so pretty useless

on the MBPro I get 30-40fps with the PJpg and 35-45 with the DXV files

So a clear advantage with the MB Pro and i'm gathering that the issue with the XP box is the video card.

Interested to know if anyone has managed decent framerates on an XP notebook as the Macbook Pro is not mine and i'm trying to avoid going into debt

erm, seems the graphic card from the pc is not strong enough... and it has shared memory hasn't it?
my "old" notebook with x600 also doesn't fit higher resolutions than pal...
i think a pc notebook with 8600gt or better without shared memory shoult do the work the same...
you can't even compare this pc notebook with an new macbook if it has shared graphic memory..
also the processor is core duo and not core 2 duo!
if you really want to play higher resolutions you also need a faster harddisk...
i'll never buy a notebook again cause it's just for working, but not for the things we do
i prefer my 2 pc's in a tool-case
also i can't live on my video setup with just one laptop without mixers and other hardware
don't trust hardware and much less software

and next point... if you buy a pc laptop... i think barbones are the best way!
i have a nexoc barebone... a laptop, if it's not a very good design like macbook pro (but the new ones have no metal case any more!) gets dirty... i'm cleaning my laptop 2 times a year so he stay's stable and at barebones you get easily to the cooler parts so clean them
