i used avenue all night and it was awesome!

Post by VJair »

thought it was about time to give some positive feedback instead of just bug reports...

i used Avenue at a gig for 8 hours solid last night with no problems at all :D it was the first beta release, not the newest one. i had to assign my midi at the start of the set as the settings wont reload, but it didnt crash on me once, so it wasnt realy an issue ( just 5 mins of assigning at the start of the night ) i was using Ableton to control Avenue so that i could sequence video triggering and complex midi actions that required more than 2 hands...lol

it was also my first event running higher res footage ( i deccided to work in higher res after seeing how well its handled by Avenue ) and i was using an eSATA hard drive to run it all from ( bought after seeing some info on here a while ago about the higher data rates ) and it performed realy well. it was not struggling at all running 6 layers of 1024x768 aqnd there was no delay in triggering of files.

the FFGL effects were great.... in the past ive been reluctant to use many effects as they could sometimes cause a little pause in playback when loading them, but this no longer seems to happen.

i know there are still some issues to iron out in the software, but as it stands now, it is still pretty damn awesome... top work fellas :D

a bit more from me....

just used avenue for the second night in a row, and yet again, it was fantastic....

we took advantage of the masks feature and i realy had a good experiment with the new effects plugins ( is there any way we can share effects presets with other people? )

i made a mask using avenue by importing a hexagon shape and spin/pan/zooming and using 5 layers ( we used 5 hex screens ) to align the projection with the screen, then used the record function in the new beta ( great feature :D )to export a film, then took a frame from the film and used that as the mask. whilst using it, we could potiion individual layers within specific areas if we wanted, and if wed had time we could have made seperate masks for each of the hexagons and aplied them as layer masks instead of a composition mask....essentialy like the IUA hex plugin works, but it was "the manual route". its so cool to be able to do all that inside of Avenue... if avenue had the ability to save a jpeg instead of quicktime then it could be done completely inside avenue. the masking has so much potential, so it was great to be able to try it out at an event ( just not the same trying it at home ). im going to be making good use of the mapping in avenue :D

the other guy i was vjing with has been working on some FFGL plugins. i'll leave it to him to tell you about them when hes ready, but they were very good. i can now start to see just whats possible with FFGL and can see my self using effects a lot more. i also found that the ability to keep stacking up the effects whilst vj'ing allowed me to create some great generative type effects using a video as the starting point and making great, beat synchd abstract pattern. no horrible pauses or jumps when you added them as could often happen in resolume 2. fantastic stuff :)

Nice story! and i have to admit that te clip/layer/composition properties are really good indeed! It's really flexible to play with... I also played around with masks (I use text maskes black/white) a lot now. The anchor en scale timeline options are also great imho.. Like VJair said.. you can do a lot more "inside" resolume now!

Great work !

Thank you for your story Arran, great to hear you are using the 'advanced' features and we're glad you like Avenue so much!
Curious to see the FFGL plugins "the other guy" made ;-)

i also tried to play with masks.
it works fine, but only for layers 3 and 4 (4 layers in total). no change in 1 and 2.
am i doing something wrong?

Yes you can actually, the presets are stored in the 'presets' folder in. This folder can be found here:
\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Resolume Avenue 3\Presets\
There is a preset file for each effect both audio and video effects.
The presets are in .xml format so should be not too hard to read and easy to copy to other computers, just copy it in the same directory. Maybe we can do a little test, post some presets here on the forum and if it all works out we could start a thread for sharing presets. Some could then maybe end up as standard presets in Resolume.

Hi, how did you manage to do 8 hours when every ten seconds the program will say "RESOLUME AVENUE" in that vocoded robot voice? How do you remove that voice?

whoops, nevermind, i'm dumb. You buy a serial to remove it :D

About to try it out for the first time today :) Here's hoping for the best.

I unfortunately didn't read the preparation guide closely enough when getting my clips ready and will be running at 400x300 res through the house projector. No time to go through and re-convert everything. Will post when the show's over :D

Only going to run a 30 minute set that my girlfriend will control while I DJ. I'm also very interested in the hard drive you're talking about since these damn PhotoJPEG mov's are like 1-2gb a pop :P

i have to be honested, i feel no difference between the old and the new beta.

after max 10 min i get a crash and its so annoying to restart avenue again and again and always get a lot of empty decks and the loading time of every deck is so slow.
shorty i finished i get the next crash and my backup notebook with resolume 2.41 has to do the job for the gig :(

i dont need new features for avenue at the moment - i need a stable and working system - thats all.

i use a macbook pro 2,5 ghz with 2gm ram and NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

set 640x480 with all files as movs (photo jpeg)

next gig (next weekend) i give resolume the last chance
