I think it would be really useful a feature for organizing the clips. Some kind of tagging system.
Imagine... I have 40000 loops, and I say "quickly, I need loops featuring airports, planes and people travelling"
I enter the tags "plane" "transportation" "airport", and the results appear, like in Garageband, or like in del.icio.us, or any piece of software that uses tags.

Re: Media catalog
hey near,
that's a good idea. I would also love to have such a tagging system - but it should be an open standard, to ensure compatibility to other vj/editing software.
how do you organize your clips at the moment? - Recently I've had a discussion with other vj's what's the best way to keep footage organized and to get instant access if you need a special clip.
prepairing decks is fine, but you loose some flexibility for live performances... and if you group them just in folders how do you name/tag the folders? using feelings, emotions, (adjectives) instead of nouns? Best practice?

Re: Media catalog
yeah, this could be a nice feature.
personaly, i use clips i have made myself, so i know them all pretty well and have them grouped in folders according to the ( rough ) role that they perform.... background, foreground, feature, objects ect.

Re: Media catalog
For folders I use a very basic (and random) hierarchy. Things like:
backgrounds
colorful
simple
people
dancing
walking
runnning
---
And for file names, a brief descriptive name, plus the resolution.
But I don't like messing with folder and file names. IMHO, is better to have some sort of loops database , like on Garageband, or iTunes.

One option is attaching meta-data to your files.
The Macintosh operating system has a nice way of adding meta-data tags to files. and search for these tags using the finder. It also has a way of coloring files. On the PC i would look at Adobe bridge.

Re: Media catalog
I categorize all my media in labeled folders based on their content....
so i have everything from static backgrounds, to client logos, to almost everything imaginable
mind you, a lot of my shows involve custom content, so I typically have a folder per client as well
