Hey all,
I'm wondering if my average frame rate in Resolume 3 is normal, or if I should expect more. My frame rate ranges from 13 to 30 fps with one to two layers of video. The average, I"d say, is 20 fps. Here are my specs:
Dual Xeon 3.2 GHx CPUs with hyperthreading turned on (of course, Resolume doesn't rely on CPU that much)
Nvidia Geforce 7800 GT (256 MB)
4 GB RAM
Media is on SATA 7200 hard drives
Resolution is 640x480
My first video layer is coming from an Osprey 560 video capture card
My 2nd video layer is a Quicktime Avid Meridian Compressed codec (I need to use true alpha channels, and this seems to be the best solution).
If anyone has a suggestion on how to improve this, that'd be great. I'd love to see a solid 30 fps with two video layers. I'm also willing to upgrade my video card, if it'll help.

Low FPS playback in Avenue
Re: Low FPS playback in Avenue
hi racher,
the Quicktime Avid Meridian Compressed codec is a pretty cpu/gpu consuming, have you tried quicktime animation codec with alpha channel ?

Re: Low FPS playback in Avenue
Okay, I'll give the QuickTime Animation codec a try. Is its quality as good as the Avid Meridian codec?
Also, I'm still curious if my frame rate is normal for only 640x480 resolution. I see others boasting much higher for multiple layers of video.
But I have a bigger question: Will I see significant improvement with a better graphics card (better than a 256 MB Geforce 7800 GT)? It's a 3-year old card, BTW...

I only work in 640x480 and I'm using a 512 meg BFG GeForce 9800 GTX+ .. Thus far I never see the fps move from around 60 frames per second with 3+ layers cranking. All my media is encoded in PICvideo M-JPEG codec http://www.resolume.com/shop/codec.php or http://www.pegasusimaging.com/picvideomjpeg.htmracher wrote:Okay, I'll give the QuickTime Animation codec a try. Re: Low FPS playback in Avenue
Picvideo won`t do the alpha channel, NSK MJPEG do the alpha channel but resolume3 don`t recognise any video encoded with NSK codec, it`s very strange.wuzzle wrote:I only work in 640x480 and I'm using a 512 meg BFG GeForce 9800 GTX+ .. Animation codec @ full quality is lossless, racher, have a try...
Re: Low FPS playback in Avenue
Thanks a bunch, guys. I tried the animation codec, and it definitely improved my frame rate, with alpha channel. For some reason, I just assumed the Avid codec would be better than the Animation codec, so I never tried it.
My frame rate is around 40 fps now, although occasionally, I see the frame rate drop to a very low number (as low as 7). I usually have to restart Resolume to get it to playback properly again. Additionally, I have encountered the "stuttering playback" that some have noticed in other threads. Basically, the frame rate may report 40 fps, but it's obvious that some frames are getting dropped in the display output monitor.
I think I might upgrade my display card to something a bit more modern to be safe as well. Thanks again for everyone's help.
