N00b question about preparing media

Post by meta-redundant »

Hi all,

I have a solid digital audio background but very little experience with video formats. I am really looking forward to working with Resolume for what it will do for my live music gigs!

The main question I have is about preapring .avi files (I am on PC). I see the the official recommendation is to run the audio and video as separate files, and this makes sense. But, does this mean you should actually *remove* the audio content from the .avi? I.e. I am taking footage from various places (such as the ever-popular archive.org) and these videos all have audio that I will be replacing with my own music in real time. So is it sufficient for me to just drag my own material onto the clips in question in the GUI, or do I also need to strip the existing audio from the .avi beforehand to reduce the overhead? Is that even possible ;) It seems like even if I "remove" the audio, it will actually just be playing silence, which is technically still data. I guess it comes down to whether Resolume will wholly substitute the audio with what you drop on the clip, or whether the overthead will be punished due to the presence of two audio sources that need decoding.

Thanks for humoring a n00b, I promise to behave ;)

A clip will always play just one video track and one audio track. So you do not have to trip the audio from a video file if you later decide to use a different audio track. Just drop in what you need and it will work without overhead.

good to know, as I had been bouncing "silent" videos, then wav files, via Ableton. This was fine and ideal for Resolume and ms pinky, but not for my friend's custom max patch. It is nice to know that I don't have to do that anymore!
