The eternal codec issue...

Hi all

First of all thank's to Bart and the team for one of the most amazing softwares i've ever used!

As many people here I have a question about the right codecs to use.

I'm running avenue on a vista PC, core duo, 1.80Ghz.

I have a sequence in Premiere CS4 which is based on DV AVI clips. The question is: what is the best codec to use to export it for use in Resolume?

Knowing that:
Quicktime codecs render my file with a pretty low quality (H.264, DXV)
INDEO and PICVideo aswell though its a bit better.
Only the DV AVI codec gives me something close to the quality in Premiere.

Exporting in DV AVI and using those clips in Resolume 3 seems to work pretty fine, though i haven't tried with a lot of media & fx. Has anybody made an comprehensive test with DV AVI clips (720*579) + Avenue 3???

As Bart & Edwin have mentioned before, if you are just using Avenue for vjing and want the best quality, render into the DXV codec included...it most definitely runs faster than any other codec because it allows for the decoding of the video right on the video card and does not introduce any noticeable compression artifacting(at least not from what I've seen)...though it currently does have a disadvantage of longer encoding times. However, if using other softwares with your vids, the recommended is still the PICvideo MJPG codec...for which there are some good settings guidlines in the Resolume Avenue manual.

i think your problem is the cs4 media encoder
have the same problems with quicktime movies...
rendering in in after effects makes a real difference... no quality loss ,)
also in the new media encoder i can't set the keyframe settings in indeo codec...
i'm rendering all in after effects, but with my new quadcore and 8gb ram defenetly faster too
look's there's some kind of bug....
the only thing which annoys me in windows with adobe cs suite is h264 with alpha channel... this just works on osx for me so far

thanks for your help. i understand the idea with dxv and it all makes sense to me. from what i've seen and heard it should be able to render files into a very good quality. theres obviously some kind of bug in my system.

the thing is, even when i put the uncompressed avi clips into resolume, the quality is much worse than rendered dv avi files!!! THAT doesn't make much sense to me. i was thinking of some kind of wrong setting with my video card, i have an ATI mobility radeon. thanx nyway, i'm gonna try with after effects!

is the low quality of the videos only on the 2nd output? i have noticed that it happens to me sometimes when i have the composition, 2nd display a and windows desktop size all at different resolutions.

just as another thought... what graphics card to you have?

aha...2nd display... thanx i didn't think of that, i'm gonna check that absolutely!

but still the full avi (just as dxv qt) shows more rough pixels than dv avi, whatever the player or software used. thats the weird thing here and technically it doesn't seem to be a resolume issue. so ill stop spaming about this here

DXV = compressed, so you'll always have some loss in quality... !?

With DV, Video is Compressed too.
DV uses DCT intraframe compression.

yeah, DV is compressed, but i think less comppressed or something. I have the same artifacts, and i think it's normal when you compare DV with DXV
