Basically what I'd like to know is how to maximise the output performance when recording, so that I can record a whole show to disk for maximum quality (along with the audio input from the DJ desk).
Many years ago I used to record everything to VHS, most recently a 'Pinnacle Video Convertor' onto a big SDHC card for 720x576 mp4@3Mbps (from composite/s-video split output), which is jst about ok for youtube but not quite sharp enough for a showreel DVD if you see my meaning. Not to mention the extra kit and cabling required...

I've worked out that @640x480 the video stream from R3 works out to about 1Gb/hr.
Because the desktop machine is used for rendering and doesn't leave the studio, these not-so-scientific tests are from my laptop.
After some tweaking of the driver settings, I've got the FPS 'at rest' to be 60-70. Pressing record then, as in without any clips playing, takes this down to 30-40FPS.
Playing 3 layers of DXV clips with keying gives ~30FPS, which when recording dips down to ~10FPS, returning to 30 after the app has finished 'writing'.
Having tried the same thing recording to a usb drive, it does indeed appear that recording reduces the display FPS by around 50%. Also that the mjpeg recording is usually less than the displayed fps...
So, are there any tweaks that can be made to the mjpec codec or even the app, to give a 25/30 fps recording that doesn't slow down the main output?
(which is a bit annoying and embarassing out in a club)
