Ableton with R3- Thanks for the tips!

Post by sburke1 »

First I would like to say THANKS ALOT for the tips on how to slave R3 to live!!!

Dis-enabling beat snap on the clips is huge, as well as using piano mode.

Here are some of my conclusions. I would love to hear feedback from other people using r3 with audio and especially people using ableton.

1 Ableton should deal with all the audio (for DJ style grid-locked audio). Maybe when they come out with faster computers this will change, but it seems to me that R3 isn't ready for gigging with audio if you want to "DJ" and imporovise on the fly. I'd love to hear otherwise? I would love to not even use ableton but R3 will glitch a little when I trigger whole columns of videos or in other CPU heavy circumstances.

2 The midi sync seems to be a little better than beta, but still not good enough to sync. Again, I turn the volume down and just try to match visually what I am doing in ableton. If I bring up the volume in R3, it is noticably off from ableton.

Tips of mine
1- Use the pitch midi effect to change the midi notes plus 36 in ableton, so R3 interprets c4 as c4, not c1. It seems the programs have a different idea of what c4 is. My session is filled with midi dummy clips and things can get disorganize very quickly.

2 set up 4 midi tracks in ableton at the far left , call them s1, s2, s3, s4. (for stop layer in r3 1, 2,3,4). This way you can stop the clips in R3 easily when you switch scenes in ableton. I made them c8,d8,e8, and f8. I will keep these the same from now on and never hit those midi notes because they are very high on the scale.

Questions.
