I don't know about mpd, that controller was great for resolume 2 because of all those pads.
I would personally go for something with more knobs and faders.
If you already have x-session than maybe OK, but if you think of buying x-session and akai then you should reconsider it and find something like Ohm. What about this, I think it's a bit cheaper http://www.codanova.com/

I use the Ohm, actually just bought a second one this week and waiting it to arrive. I just started using it with resolume, but I am totally new to resolume, I mostly use Live for audio and arkaos for video. It seems good for resolume and the controls are nice, i'll let you know how it goes as I learn resolume more. I wish the led had feedback but it is solid. livid seems to sell it for less then they have it listed and i just bought a red one from the site for 20% less.

VJNYC and what? Resolume with Livid works well together?
