Use a firewire cable to connect the camera to the laptop/computer.
firewire is often called i-link on Sony models, but it is the same interface.

If the camera is connected correctly and switched on, you should see it under "sources".
Drag it on a layer just like you do with clips.

Enjoy!

For life feed... Make sure the camera is in Record mode... (not necceserily recording).
In playback mode it will show (probably) nothing unless you start playing the tape or internal memory of the camera.

The hvr-a1e is an HDV camera - I have the same but Japanese model.

I have not found a way to connect the A1J to Resolume in HD mode - however, it works fine in DV mode.

In the A1 menu, find the option for recording type and make it DV (instead of 1080i). Plug the camera into your computer using a 4-pin FireWire (i.link) cable. It should turn up as a source in Resolume. If not, try looking for the setting for i.link down conversion, and make sure it is either Auto or Enabled.
